Filming in Bali during Nyepi is not a realistic plan. Love Bali says the island closes for 24 hours, airport included, and everyone stays indoors. In 2026, transport providers could not operate and mobile providers were asked to switch off data. The 2027 date is Monday 8 March, so schedule the shoot around it.

Can you film in Bali during Nyepi?

Plan on no. The Love Bali account of Nyepi describes a closed island, airport included, with everyone indoors for 24 hours. The 2026 points below mention no exception for film crews, so do not treat a Bali film permit as a way round them. This is a sacred day for the island, so the only useful advice is about the days either side of it. This page offers none about shooting on the day itself.

If someone offers to arrange an exception, ask which authority granted it and ask to see it in writing. Given what the official sources describe, treat a verbal assurance as no assurance at all.

When is Nyepi in 2027?

Monday 8 March 2027 is the date on Indonesia's national holiday list, according to Hukumonline's report of the joint ministerial decree. The date moves each year. In 2026 it fell on 19 March, so a production that reuses last year's calendar would be out by more than a week.

The hours are a separate matter. The 2026 window ran from 06.00 WITA on 19 March to 06.00 WITA on 20 March, under an annual joint appeal. As of November 2026 we have not seen the 2027 appeal, so treat 2026 as the pattern and do not treat any 2027 hour as fixed until the new appeal appears. Airport timings for 2027 belong in the same category. Note that 8 March follows a weekend, so any travel you were planning to squeeze in on the Sunday deserves an early look.

What stops during Nyepi?

Using 2026 as the guide, nearly everything a crew depends on. The appeal said land, sea and air transport providers were not allowed to operate. It also asked mobile providers to switch off mobile data, and said TV and radio would not broadcast. Questions about whether roads close are answered, in practice, by that rule on land transport providers and by the instruction to stay indoors.

What stops during Nyepi?
ItemWhat the 2026 sources describeWhat it means for a schedule
Land transportProviders not allowed to operateNo unit moves; book no vehicles for the day
Sea transportProviders not allowed to operateNo island transfers; plan Nusa Penida or Menjangan travel well clear
Air transportProviders not allowed to operate; Love Bali says the airport is closedNo crew arrivals, departures or air freight
Mobile dataProviders asked to switch it offDo not depend on messaging apps or cloud tools
TV and radioNot broadcastingNo broadcast outlets to coordinate with that day

What happens to flights and data?

On the 2026 pattern, flights stop for the window. A crew member booked into or out of Denpasar during it has a problem to solve weeks in advance, and connecting itineraries deserve the same check as direct ones. Hand-carried equipment and courier shipments also need a date on the correct side of the closure.

The data request changes how a production communicates. Treat anything held only in the cloud as out of reach, including call sheets, location agreements, permit scans and rushes that were meant to upload overnight. Saving those files to local drives before the closure is simple and worth doing. For fixed-line internet at your accommodation, ask the property what it expects.

Drones add no opening here. With everyone indoors, the question of a flight does not really arise, and Part 107 separately rules out flying inside a NOTAM area without the agreement of air traffic control or the Directorate General. We do not know whether a NOTAM is issued for Nyepi. The general limits are on the drone rules page.

What happens to people who break the rules?

Wikipedia notes that tourists can face deportation or prosecution for violating Nyepi rules. That is an encyclopedia summary and not a statute, and it lists no cases or penalties in that passage. It also speaks of tourists generally. A crew should not expect softer treatment because it holds film paperwork.

Community expectations matter as well. A production depends on the goodwill of the villages and temple managers it works with, and a breach of the Day of Silence puts that goodwill at risk for the rest of the shoot.

How do you plan a shoot around it?

Put the date in the production calendar first and build everything else around it. A sensible order of work:

  1. Mark Nyepi as a full non-working day for every department, and add a buffer on each side. Our suggestion is at least one working day before and after, because the closure pattern starts and ends at 06.00 and people and kit need time to reposition.
  2. Book crew flights so that no one travels inside the likely window, and hold the final times until the 2027 appeal is out.
  3. Move island transfers, vehicle returns and equipment shipments clear of the buffer.
  4. Copy every document and file you need onto local storage before the closure.
  5. Check the wider holiday calendar for your dates, because Nyepi is not the only pause.
  6. Ask each location whether its own calendar affects access, and make sure any schedule written into your permit reflects the dates you will actually shoot.

On that fifth point, Bali Discovery lists Galungan and Kuningan as official Bali holidays when many businesses close, and says Galungan typically runs to four days of observance. Bali Discovery lists Galungan on 13 January and Kuningan on 23 January 2027. It also lists an August pair that does not fit its own ten-day rule, so no August date appears here. Temples are a special case, and the temple filming guide covers them. For a wider view of the year, see the best time to film in Bali.

We know of no published filming rule for the ogoh-ogoh parades before Nyepi. If a project depends on filming them, raise it with your local partner and the community concerned early on, because the permissions and the people involved are local.

What do crews ask about the Day of Silence?

When is Nyepi in Bali?

In 2027 it falls on Monday 8 March, based on the national holiday list as reported by Hukumonline. The date changes every year, so check the current year's list before you fix a schedule.

Can I fly a drone during Nyepi?

Plan on no. Love Bali says everyone stays indoors for 24 hours, and aviation rules separately restrict flights in NOTAM areas.

Is mobile data off during Nyepi?

In 2026 the joint appeal asked mobile providers to switch it off. We have not seen the 2027 appeal, so treat 2026 as the pattern and prepare to work offline.

What happens to a shoot on Nyepi?

It stops. Schedule the day as a full rest day for every department, and move crew travel, island transfers and equipment shipments well clear of it.

Is the Bali airport closed on Nyepi?

Love Bali says so, and the 2026 appeal said air transport providers were not allowed to operate from 06.00 WITA on 19 March to 06.00 WITA on 20 March. Wait for the 2027 appeal before you fix flights close to the date.

Can a crew leave the hotel on Nyepi?

Plan on staying in. Love Bali says everyone stays indoors for 24 hours, and the 2026 points mention no exception for crews. Ask your accommodation in advance how it handles the day.

How do I reach the desk?

If your dates run close to Nyepi, tell the desk the shoot window, the locations and when your crew lands. Email bd@juaraholding.com or message WhatsApp +62 811-3941-4563. The desk can respond to a scheduling question but cannot change a closure or confirm 2027 times. Requests can lead to a paid booking, so we have a commercial interest, and the disclaimer page has the details.
