How long does a film permit take in Indonesia? No single figure holds. The regulation allows seven working days, but only after officials verify your documents. Washington requires applications six weeks ahead, and Canberra strongly advises twelve weeks before departure. Production companies quote their own figures. Plan from your own mission's number, add the visa stage, and check where any drone approval falls on your route.

How long does a film permit take in Indonesia?

The published figures for a Bali film permit look contradictory until you check what each one measures. Some count from a verified file, some count back from your departure, and some describe the whole process from an operator's point of view. The table keeps each figure with its source and does not blend them.

For a schedule, the Washington and Canberra figures tell you when to file, and the operator figures tell you how sellers of this service describe the wait. None of them promises you a date.

What does the regulation actually promise?

The clause promises less than the number suggests. Article 6(1) of Regulation 48/2018 says the head of the film development unit issues the permit within a maximum of seven working days after documents are confirmed complete and correct. The clock starts at that confirmation. Time spent at the embassy, in verification and in correcting a document sits outside it. A crew that reads "seven working days" and files a fortnight before flying has misread the clause.

Why do embassies give different lead times?

They write for their own applicants and count from different events. Washington says applications must arrive at least six weeks before the intended visit or production, which works as a floor. Canberra strongly advises applying at least twelve weeks before departure, which reads as planning advice. The two do conflict: a crew could meet Washington's figure and still fall well short of Canberra's. Follow the mission that actually takes your file and ask it directly if its page says nothing.

Vienna is the outlier. Its page says applications are normally approved or refused within eight hours after verification. We name it so you can recognise it, and you should not plan on it. The page names the former education ministry, which dates it, and the eight hours start only after verification, so the figure says nothing about the weeks before that point.

What do operators quote?

Most production companies speak in weeks, and most advise a margin above their own processing figure. Bali Film Center gives four to six weeks for the permit and advises starting at least eight weeks before filming. NEEDaFIXER gives about four to eight weeks and recommends two months. TDR Films recommends six to eight weeks before the shoot. Indonesia Fixer advises at least thirty days before departure on an undated page, the shortest advice here, so weigh it accordingly.

Bali Fixer, an operator on the ministry list, gives four to six weeks once the embassy sends the application to Jakarta. That starting point matters, because time at the embassy comes first. One company disagrees with itself: Hoodlum's Bali page says 14 to 30 working days, while its Indonesia page says eight weeks. These companies sell the service they describe, and none of them controls the office's clock. If you are comparing a film fixer in Bali, ask each one what event starts their count.

How long do the visa and drone stages add?

The visa follows the permit. Drone order depends on the route: TDR Films lists drone clearance last, while Washington wants approval for a drone brought from abroad before the visa application. The figures available come from operators and conflict.

  • Visa. Spin Productions says about 10 to 14 working days after the permit decision. Hoodlum's Bali page says seven to fourteen working days, and its Indonesia page says about five. We have no official figure for the visa stage.
  • Drone. Transport Ministry Regulation 37/2020 requires approval requests at least 14 working days before the operation. Atlas Film Fixers gives seven to fourteen working days for processing, and Hoodlum's Indonesia page says about four to six weeks for the civil aviation permit. The regulation sets a filing deadline, so it does not settle how long approval takes.

Drone shoots have other steps too, covered on commercial drone filming in Bali. Site-level consent has no published timing that we know of, so ask each manager when you contact them.

How do changes reset the clock?

Two rules apply at different moments. Washington warns that changes to crew, agenda, interviewees, purpose, location or equipment mean resubmitting the application with a letter from the production lead. For a crew using that mission, a late camera or a replacement director can send you back to the start of the embassy stage.

After a permit exists, the regulation's Article 8 applies. If locations or schedule change, the foreign party must notify the film unit in writing at least seven working days before shooting at the new location. Scouting that finds a better beach three days before the shoot does not fit that rule, so if you have a genuine reserve location, list it in the original file.

What schedule should you plan around?

  1. Find your mission's figure. Canberra says twelve weeks before departure, and Washington's six weeks is the latest you can file there. If your mission publishes nothing, ask it in writing.
  2. Freeze the crew, locations and equipment list before filing, so you do not trigger a resubmission.
  3. Book non-refundable items only after the permit and visa stages clear, as far as your production allows.
  4. If you plan drone work, file that request at least 14 working days ahead and allow for Hoodlum's longer figure.

A worked example shows the gap between the two missions. For a crew flying out on Monday 1 March 2027, Canberra's advice points to applying by Monday 7 December 2026, and Washington's rule points to its file arriving by Monday 18 January 2027, if the visit starts that day. Those dates come from counting back the weeks and say nothing about when an office will answer. The full sequence of steps is on how to get a film permit in Bali.

What do crews ask about permit timing?

How long does a Bali film permit take?

Bali uses the national process, so the national figures apply. Bali Film Center says four to six weeks for the permit, and Hoodlum's Bali page says 14 to 30 working days. Both are operator figures.

How long does a C14 visa take?

The available figures come from operators. Spin Productions says about 10 to 14 working days after the permit decision, and Hoodlum's Bali page says seven to fourteen working days. Hoodlum's Indonesia page says about five working days for the crew visa.

Can a film permit be rushed in Indonesia?

Neither the regulation nor the embassies describe an official fast track. The seven working days in the regulation are a maximum after verification, and Washington words its six weeks as a must. Ask the mission before you assume it will accept a late file.

When should I apply for a Bali film permit?

Use your mission's figure: twelve weeks before departure at Canberra, and at least six weeks before the production at Washington. If your mission publishes none, ask it, and remember the visa comes after the permit.

How long does a Bali filming permit take if the plan changes?

It depends on when the change comes. Washington treats changes to crew, agenda, location or equipment as a resubmission, and the regulation requires written notice at least seven working days before shooting at a new location.

How do I reach the desk?

Share your first shoot day, your mission and how much of the file exists. We can tell you where we can help, though we cannot shorten any office's time or promise a date. Requests sometimes turn into paid bookings, and that gives us a commercial interest. A written offer sets out the fee, the price and the contracting company before you agree, and nothing else binds either side.
